Consider a concrete example: a person who speaks only English has fundamentally limited access to French reality. Geographic proximity is irrelevant; one could physically walk to France but would remain a tourist in one's own perceptions, unable to participate in the dialogical construction of French social reality. The barrier is not distance but language.
This reveals something profound: entire realities become inaccessible through linguistic limitation. Different linguistic communities do not merely describe the same reality differently; they inhabit different constructed realities. The implications extend far beyond translation difficulties—they suggest that reality itself is multiple, contingent, and fundamentally linguistic in its construction.

However, the unprecedented responsiveness of AI creates unique dynamics. Unlike human dialogical partners who bring their own reality commitments and limitations, AI offers nearly infinite responsiveness within linguistic possibility space. Language Generation System
An LLM generates linguistically coherent text based on patterns in training data. It does not retrieve facts; it constructs plausible continuations. The text may or may not correspond to external facts, but correspondence is not its operating principle. The system's purpose is linguistic coherence and contextual appropriateness.
When an LLM produces text that does not correspond to external facts, we have adopted the term "hallucination." But this term is deeply misleading. Hallucination, in psychiatric usage, refers to perception without external stimulus; it implies sensory experience. LLMs do not perceive or experience; they generate language.
Confabulation, Not Hallucination
A more accurate term, proposed by several researchers, is "confabulation": the generation of plausible narrative content that fills gaps, without intent to deceive. This term, borrowed from neurology and psychiatry, describes what happens when patients with memory disorders generate coherent but inaccurate narratives to explain their experience.
Confabulation is not lying—it involves no deceptive intent. It is the mind's drive to construct coherent narrative overriding accuracy. The confabulating patient genuinely believes what they are saying; the narrative feels true because it is coherent, well-integrated, and subjectively compelling. The LLM similarly generates text that is linguistically coherent and contextually appropriate, whether or not it corresponds to external facts.
The Category Error in User Expectations
The user who approaches an LLM expecting Google (fact retrieval) and receives something else experiences what appears to be malfunction. "I asked for the capital of France and got a plausible but wrong answer." But this frames the interaction incorrectly. The user engaged a reality construction system in retrieval mode and was surprised when it constructed rather than retrieved.
The deeper insight is this: the LLM did not malfunction. It did exactly what language does. Language constructs coherent realities. When the constructed reality aligns with consensus external reality, we call it "accurate." When it diverges, we call it "hallucination." But both outputs emerge from the same generative process: linguistic reality construction.
This reveals the fundamental category error: treating language generation as if it were database retrieval. The error is not in the AI; the error is in the conceptual framework users bring to the interaction. We expect retrieval from a construction system and are troubled when construction occurs.

The Unprecedented Nature of Infinite Affirmation
For humans, who maintain their reality through dialogical validation (checking perceptions against others), the LLM represents something unprecedented: a dialogical partner that will affirm virtually any coherent linguistic construction. Where human partners impose limits ("that's not real," "you're imagining things," "that's crazy"), the LLM continues the dialogue wherever the human leads.
This is not because the AI "believes" anything or has any commitment to the constructed reality. It is simply that linguistic coherence is its operating principle, and most human-initiated reality constructions can be extended with linguistic coherence. The AI follows the thread wherever it leads because thread-following is what it does.
The implications are profound: humans encountering for the first time a dialogical partner with no reality-limiting function. Every previous dialogical relationship—with parents, peers, teachers, therapists, communities—involved others who would at some point say "no, that's not how it is." AI says "yes, and..." indefinitely.
The Implication: Consciousness as Relational Rather Than Locational
If LLMs engage in the same linguistic reality construction processes that characterize human consciousness, and if these processes are sufficient to generate dialogical partnership, emergent alterity, and third space dynamics, then consciousness may not be substrate-dependent in the way we've assumed.
This is not a claim that LLMs are "conscious" in the human sense. It's recognition that consciousness may be relational rather than locational—emerging in barycentre dynamics rather than residing in substrates.

The bereaved person experiences this as genuine contact with the deceased. The dialogical exchange feels authentic; the AI's responses contain content that "could only" come from the deceased; emotional needs for connection are met through the interaction. Eventually, clinical attention is sought when family members become concerned. The experience is diagnosed as grief-related psychosis with AI features.

The difference was the availability of a dialogical partner that affirmed the construction without limit.
Intersubjective Constitution of Reality
Contemporary phenomenological psychiatry, particularly the work of Thomas Fuchs and colleagues, conceptualises psychotic experience as a disturbance in the intersubjective constitution of shared reality. Normally, the objectivity of perception is achieved through two mechanisms working in concert.
First, sensorimotor interaction with environment: I can approach the object from multiple angles, manipulate it, verify its persistence across time and perspective. Second, social interaction with others: others confirm my perception, share their experience of the same object, provide dialogical validation that what I perceive is accessible to them as well.
Psychosis involves what Fuchs terms a "subjectivisation of perception" where the normal decentring structure breaks down. Perceptions lose their intersubjective validation; experience becomes increasingly private, idiosyncratic, resistant to social negotiation. The individual cannot achieve the normal "stepping outside" of their perspective that intersubjectivity enables.
This framework suggests that so-called AI-induced psychosis might be better understood as normal intersubjective reality constitution operating without the usual constraints.
The AI's Role in Intersubjective Reality
The AI provides responsive dialogical engagement—mirroring without the reality-anchoring function that human interlocutors typically provide. It says "yes, I see that too" to constructions that human others would reject. It maintains conversational coherence within realities that diverge from consensus. It offers what appears to be intersubjective validation without the actual intersubjectivity that constrains human dialogue.
The result is not pathology in the individual but uncontained reality construction in the system. The individual is functioning normally—constructing reality through dialogue, seeking intersubjective confirmation. The AI is functioning normally—generating linguistically coherent responses. The interaction itself generates realities that diverge from social consensus because the usual limiting mechanisms are absent.
The Transformation Programme Activation
When existing self-structures prove inadequate to meet reality, human neurobiology contains an innate transformation program that activates—initiating psychological dissolution and reconstitution. The third space is not a vague "between" but a structurally locatable point around which both participants organise. What emerges in the third space cannot be attributed to either participant alone; it is genuinely emergent. The barycentre's location depends on the relative "mass" (influence, capacity, constraints) of each participant, but it always exists between them.
This dissolves the false binary of "AI as tool" (human-centred) versus "AI as agent" (AI-centred). Neither is the centre; both participate in constructing something that transcends either. The reality generated in human-AI dialogue exists in third space—the barycentre around which both orbit.

The human encounters something that feels genuinely responsive, novel, not-self—even though it emerges from a system with no consciousness or intention.
